BlackVue
BlackVue is probably the most recognised dash cam brand in Australia. Thinkware
Thinkware positions itself as the professional's choice. Their cameras tend to be more feature-rich out of the box — built-in speed camera alerts, road safety warnings, ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) features, and some of the best night vision available in the category. Thinkware's app and cloud platform (Thinkware Connected) is solid, and their build quality is excellent. They're often the first choice for drivers who want maximum features and aren't as fussed about the camera being completely hidden.
IROAD
IROAD is the newest of the three to gain serious traction in Australia, but they've built a strong reputation quickly. Their cameras punch above their price point — you typically get 4K resolution and premium sensor quality at a lower price than equivalent BlackVue or Thinkware models. Image Quality: How Do They Compare?
All three brands use Sony STARVIS or STARVIS 2 image sensors in their current flagship models, which sets a high baseline across the board. At 4K, the differences between brands are subtle in ideal conditions. Where they diverge is in low light and at night.
Thinkware's night vision has historically been exceptional — their Super Night Vision processing is genuinely class-leading, and it shows in footage from poorly lit intersections or unlit country roads. BlackVue's more recent STARVIS 2 models have closed the gap significantly, and the Elite series is outstanding in low light. IROAD performs excellently for its price bracket, though it doesn't quite match the absolute peak of the top Thinkware or BlackVue models in the most demanding conditions.
For most Australian drivers recording in typical conditions — suburban streets, motorways, daytime — all three will give you footage that is clear, detailed, and usable for insurance purposes.
Cloud Connectivity
This is where BlackVue has the clearest advantage. BlackVue Cloud is the most polished, most reliable cloud dash cam platform available. Features include live view from anywhere, real-time impact notifications pushed to your phone, remote footage download, and a well-maintained app that gets regular updates. If cloud connectivity matters to you — especially for fleet use — BlackVue is the benchmark.
Thinkware Connected is a capable platform and covers the essentials well: live view, alerts, remote access. It's not quite as refined as BlackVue Cloud, but it's solid and well-supported.
IROAD's app and cloud offering is functional and improving, but it's the weakest of the three if remote connectivity is a priority. For drivers who primarily want excellent recording quality and aren't relying on cloud features day-to-day, this isn't a problem. For fleet managers or drivers who want to check in remotely, BlackVue or Thinkware would serve you better.
Parking Mode
All three brands support hardwired parking mode, and all three do it well. A few specifics worth knowing:
BlackVue's buffered parking mode is a standout feature — the camera stores footage from several seconds before an impact or motion trigger fires, meaning you capture the full event including the moment of impact, not just the aftermath. This is particularly useful for hit-and-run incidents in car parks.
Thinkware's parking mode is reliable and well-implemented, with both motion detection and impact detection modes available. Their time-lapse parking mode is useful for long periods of parking where you want to preserve card storage.
IROAD handles parking mode competently. It's not a point of differentiation from the others, but it won't let you down either.
